Lefkas

Dimanche 31 octobre 2021

Sunday, October 31, 2021

I start the blog for the day before yesterday this morning. It’s a long morning because we changed the time last night. Søren and Astrid come to say goodbye, they are going for a drive inlands before returning to Denmark next Saturday. Then I finish scratching the hull, Jens works on the boat, he sorts and tidies tings. We have a visit from a "neighbor", a  Dutchman who arrived from Amsterdam today to see a boat he might buy; this boat is two places from us. We invite him for lunch and we chat well. After our stillestund we go to the long beach by car. When we get home I finish the first blog and do to the second one, for yesterday. We dine of Friday's doggy-bag, we dine inside, it's chilly.

Samedi 30 octobre 2021

Saturday, October 30, 2021

It blew a really strong wind last night and we could feel the boat vibrate, it's not pleasant. We stop by to say goodbye to Anna and HP who are returning to Denmark today and we are heading south to visit Lefkas Island. We are going to cross the floating (and swinging) bridge by car, for the first time. And, luckily, we get there at noon. We see it rotate, three sailboats pass and it returns to its original position. The line of cars is long. Just after, we arrive at the town of Lefkada which we visit on foot. Lots of people, it's Saturday and the weather is nice. We continue along the west coast which is mountainous. We go down to a large beach, we swim but Jens forgot my swimsuit top! I swim anyway, there are few people on the beach. We go back to the main road (which is not big at all) and start looking for a place to have lunch. In Agios Nikitas we see many parked cars and a street closed to cars leading down to the sea. We take it on foot and several tavernas are open below near a small beach. We have a tomato salad and the tomatoes must come from Holland, they have no taste. But the next dish "aubergines imam" is excellent. A Greek coffee ends the meal and we leave, driving still along the west coast. Further on, a sign indicates a beach 5 km away. We are quite high and these 5 km are a steep, narrow and hairpin descent. And all this to arrive at a tiny beach between rocks. A Dutch family is there, that's all. Quick swim and steep ascent by car. We are now continuing to Vasiliki, in the south of the island of Lefkas, we had been there with Hera II in the fall, we saw the parade for  the "Day of No" on October 28, 2018 (I believe). The marina that was not finished then is still not finished. To get back we take the faster road along the east coast and arrive at the boat at 7:30 pm. It's late, I'm tired and I just send a message that there won't be any blog today.

                                                                               Malva. Preveza

 Vendredi 29 0ctobre 2021

Friday October 29, 2021

Today Jens will take care of the boat's papers. As Hera II is registered in Norway, it is more complicated than a boat registered in the European Union. He has to go to two offices: Port police and customs. So we leave by car together at 9 am for Preveza with my bike in the trunk. Jens thinks it'll take all morning, at least. During this time, I will go for a walk, take pictures and buy the newspaper. The newsagent tells me I'm lucky: I have the only copy of The New York Times and it's the last of the season, they only got it summer. I take pictures of a cargo ship arriving at the dock, then of flowers, including a weird red "flower". A gentleman tells me "chili", and that's right, it's a chili. He also plucks a lemon from a tree and gives it to me. I look at children's books in a bookstore and on one page I can't understand a picture of a fruit that has the name in Greek underneath. I ask the saleswoman who doesn't know the name in English, but a customer steps in and says it's a kiwi. The people are nice here. After an hour Jens calls me, he's done! It must be said that now that he has taken Norwegian nationality, that makes things a bit easier. Before, they had difficulty understanding that a Dane came with the papers from a Norwegian yacht. We take a cappuccino to celebrate, we do some shopping and get back to the boat. I see that a green Fisher is being taken out of the water and it is registered in Toulon. I speak with the owners who are Swiss. They remember that we had already spoken together in October 2019. They are leaving this evening to return to Switzerland by car. Lunch, stillestund then work, me scratching the hull and Jens with the loose propeller. We have a visit from HP (Hans Peter but everyone calls him HP) and Anna. They go up the ladder and we have an orange juice together. They appreciate Hera II, she is "hyggelig" (in Danish) = koselig (in Norwegian) = comfortable and pleasant (in French). Then I start the blog and at 6.30 p.m. we leave in two cars (Søren also rented a car) to Preveza. Very nice dinner, not only did we all sail a lot but we share the fact of living in the boat on land. And we women have a handyman husband who knows the boat from A to Z (or from A to Å in Danish). They tell us a horrible story of rats on board. Especially HP and Anna had to clean their boat for three weeks after a family of rats had settled there when the boat was ashore in the winter near Athens. The rats starved to death after having gnawed everything they could eat: food, blankets, electric wires, wood… We return to Ionion Marina at 9:30 pm, I finish the blog, Jens reads the newspaper… and falls asleep.
